According to the stats shown on the official site number of download is more than 10 million (we will never know that whether they are bluffing or not). After downloading just run the setup and install bluestacks (too obvious).
Once you run the application you will see that it looks like an android phone. Yes, it's an emulator that runs android phone on your PC. It would look something like this

Now click on the "Open 1Mobile Market" and then search the keyword "whatsapp". Click on the "Download" button and there starts you download.

Once the download is complete, the whatsapp launcher will appear in "My Apps"
Now just run "Whatsapp" and it enter the mobile number from which you want to stay in touch with your friends. A verification message will be sent to your mobile. Enter the code and you're on.
