Viruses are nothing but a code that has the capability to replicate itself and spread from one machine to another through external devices, insecure network, CDs, flash disks etc. Different viruses are designed to function differently. Where some viruses are does not cause any harm to your computer but is simply designed to disturb operators, some viruses are extremely dangerous and causes severe jeopardy to your computer.
Of all the medium through virus can spread, internet is the biggest hub. As PCs nowadays are getting more and more integrated with internet, chances of virus intrusion increases gravely. However, these invasions can be restrained through proper precautions. Following is a list of few things that you can do in order to keep your computer safe from these hideous creatures.

There are many antiviruses available nowadays that furnish tremendous protection from any sort of viruses. The choice of antivirus totally depends on how much protection you need.  If your data are not that critical then a simple version of antivirus would do where as if your data are too critical and you cannot afford to lose it, then an antivirus that delivers total protection is compulsory. If you are a constant internet user, then antiviruses that offers real-time protection is a necessity.
  • Keep your antivirus up-to-date. No antivirus is going to work for you if you do not keep it updated. This is because numerous viruses are born every day. If your antivirus is old, it will not be sufficient to battle the newborns. All good antivirus companies keep introducing its new versions from time to time. You just need to maintain a pace with them and upgrade the latest one to keep you out of any danger.
  • Use a firewall. A firewall is a software or a hardware device, which is developed to restrict unauthorized entry to your computer (by viruses or hackers). If you do not have a firewall, your computer will be vulnerable to malicious infections.
  • Be conscious about opening random attachments. Only open those attachments or files that are sent to you by a known source. People often be careless about these links or files or other kind of attachment and unconsciously open them. These unknown attachments are mostly viruses and once a virus enters your computer, you will have a hard time pushing them out. In fact, the best way to discover whether the file is a virus or not, is through scanning. Always scan these attachments before downloading them.
  • Do not download stuff from unknown sites. Almost all good antiviruses combines a feature of suggesting whether the website is free from viruses or not. You would see a small green check symbol on those sites, which are safe to visit, and a small red cross symbol on those pages which are unsafe. Do not visit sites, which are unsafe because those sites are definitely infected.
