The Optimus G Pro also improves on multi-tasking with the updated Snapdragon 600 chipset and revamped QSlide multi-tasking that works a lot better than the version we saw on the Optimus G.

The LG Optimus G Pro is quite the entertainer too - it can be the device that ties together your whole multimedia setup at home. It has multiple ways to stream multimedia (both wired and wireless) and thanks to Dual Screen Dual Play, the phablet's display is independent of the TV display.

And it's not done when you press play either, with its IR emitter and QRemote app the G Pro can control your TV and stereo, but also a projector and even an air con.

LG has put a 13MP main camera on the Optimus G Pro, same as the regular G, and bumped up the front-facer to 2.1MP / 1080p. This may seem as a minor upgrade, but it's made cooler by the Dual recording feature - it uses both cameras to capture both the photographer and the subject. The still camera grew a couple of new features too, Intelligent Auto and VR Panoramas (which are basically Photo Spheres).

The phablet has a 3,140mAh battery, about what you'd expect from a device this size. But it also comes with a spare battery with its own charging dock, which also serves as a stand for the handset (no need to swap batteries to have them both charged, but no simultaneous charging either). That's great news anyway for heavy users who run their battery flat in under a day. The G Pro supports wireless charging out of the box too.

It may seem quite unfortunate for the Galaxy Grand that a week from now it'll be yesterday's news. But on a second thought, it has a better insurance policy against irrelevance than most of last season's Samsung phones that tried too hard to emulate the Galaxy S III.

Dual-SIM support is obviously not a universally sought-after feature but demand for smartphones that can operate two SIM cards has been consistently strong in certain markets. This fact should at least begin to explain why the Galaxy Grand is currently the second most popular handset in this website's database.

So, Samsung has been busy lately releasing phones styled after the outgoing flagship, the Galaxy S III. Think a particular screen size and level of equipment, and the Koreans most likely have it. Now, a massive screen and

dual-SIM support doesn't sound like the combination on many people's minds but what do we know. It may've made all the sense in the world for Samsung to unleash a big fat five-incher in a niche that other smartphone makers like Sony, HTC and LG are very much interested in too.

Switching from Exynos to Broadcom looks like a minor step down in terms of GPU, but as we saw on the S II Plus the superior power efficiency more than makes up for it. In fact, combined with the low (by today's standards) screen resolution this might turn the Galaxy Grand in one of the longest lasting smartphones on the market.

So, this is Huawei's first foray into phablets but the Chinese have a handful of smartphones and tablets under their belt which, at least on paper, are no worse than the competition's flagships. A crossover was only a matter of time obviously.

Samsung's success with the Note, followed by LG and their Optimus G Pro, swung the door wide open for the smaller brands to start exploring the phablet form factor too.

The Huawei Ascend Mate is a prominent figure in this trend and its 6.1" screen sees it squeezed between two serious rivals, the Samsung Mega pair. It's worth noting though, that Huawei were well ahead of Samsung in announcing their device.

Like most of the latest generation of Huawei devices, the Ascend Mate is powered by the company's home-brewed K3V2 chip. That's probably not top-of-the-line technology, but four Cortex-A9 CPU cores clocked at 1.5GHz and a 16-core GPU, is the same combo powering their current 1080p-screen flagship, Ascend D2. It should be more than capable to keep Android running glitch-free at 720p resolution.

The Huawei Ascend Mate has got some special software treatment too. The gadget is running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, but it's been seriously redesigned with Huawei's own Emotion UI for a clean and simple user interface that omits an app drawer and keeps the widgets.
