Seven Essential Things You Need to Know about Windows 8 and Windows RT

Thinking of upgrading to Windows 8 or buying a PC with the new operating system? Confused by all the changes in Windows that have taken place? In this article I will try to give answers to some basic questions about the new systems. Here are the essential things you need to know before you upgrade or buy anything.

1. What is the difference between Windows 8 and Windows RT?

There are actually two distinct new versions of Windows. They are intended for different kinds of hardware and Microsoft marketing has not explained the difference very well. One version is called Windows 8; the other is sometimes called Windows 8 RT but, more often, just Windows RT.
Windows RT is designed to run on mobile platforms that use what are called ARM processors and it will not run on conventional PCs that use x86/64 processors.. It is oriented to a touch interface and will only run software that is specifically written for it. It also will not run many older peripherals. Note that RT is the operating system on the recently released tablet from Microsoft called Surface.
The system called Windows 8 is for conventional PCs that use x86/64 processors but with a lot of emphasis on using touch screens. However, it will run most legacy programs. This is the system to use for upgrading older Windows versions.  To break into the new era of touch screens, Microsoft has given Windows 8 a split personality. In many ways it is like two operating systems in one package. It has one interface that looks much like the Windows 7 desktop (but no Start menu) and it has another interface with colorful tiles that is intended mostly for systems with touch screens. This tile interface is the default and is called the “Start Screen”. Using Windows 8 tends to involve switching back and forth between the two interfaces.

2. Can you use Windows 8 on a system with a mouse and no touch screen?

Yes, it is possible to use Windows 8 in a purely point-and-click environment. But in my personal experience it takes some getting used to and it can be frustrating at first. For example, the absence of a Start button and Start Menu requires an adjustment in thinking. With or without a touch screen, Windows 8 requires learning new ways to do things.

3. What existing Windows systems can be upgraded to Windows 8?

You can use an upgrade edition of Windows 8 (not RT) on Windows XP, Vista, and 7. However, only Windows 7 systems will allow for the transfer of existing files, programs and settings. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will need to reinstall your programs.
To check what legacy applications work on Windows 8, you can download the Upgrade Assistant from this Microsoft link. You can also check hardware compatibility at this Microsoft page. According to Microsoft, the minimum system requirements are as shown below (but personally I would double the RAM and the disk space):
  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)
  • RAM: 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
Note that these requirements are a minimum and probably do not allow for very much activity on the PC.

4. What are the new Metro or Windows Store apps?

As part of its growing emphasis on mobile platforms, Microsoft has begun its own collection of apps for its new operating systems with an online source called the Windows Store. Microsoft originally called these little programs Metro apps but a trademark dispute led to a name change and they are now called “Windows Store” apps. In emulation of Apple, all Windows Store apps have to be approved by Microsoft. There are currently far fewer of these apps for Windows 8/RT than there are for Apple IOS or Android platforms but developers are adding new ones as time goes by.
Only apps that are bought or downloaded from the Windows Store can be used on a platform that has RT as its operating system. Windows RT will not run any standard desktop Windows applications except the applications that are bundled with the operating system. However, Windows 8 will run Windows Store apps as well as older legacy programs.
For the technically minded, the Windows Store apps and the bundled apps on Windows 8/RT use new APIs that are different to the conventional WinAPI set. All the gory details about APIs can be read here.

5. How do you dual-boot Windows 7 with Windows 8?

The procedure is quite straightforward. It is described at many places on the web. According to Microsoft link, you will need a full edition of Windows 8 in order to dual-boot. Personally, I have been using a virtual machine.

6. What editions of Windows 8 are there?

Wikipedia has a very large chart (link here) with all the information you are likely to want. Basically, however, there are two consumer versions of Windows 8, each with 32- and 64-bit varieties, plus a 32-bit Windows RT. For the time being, Microsoft is offering Windows 8 Pro upgrades for the same price as plain Windows 8 and should be your choice.
If you are a user of Windows Media Center, you should be aware that Microsoft is going to charge extra for this feature. However, until January 31, 2013 you can get Media Center as a free addition to Windows 8 Pro. Go to this Microsoft page.

7. Is it worth upgrading to Windows 8?

The decision to upgrade depends on a number of factors and is a function of individual preferences. Let me say up front that my personal opinion is that most ordinary home PC users employing a point-and-click environment will find the benefits of a Windows 8 upgrade to be marginal. It is on touch screen devices where Windows 8 shines.
Those who have Windows XP or older Vista systems may very well find that their hardware is too old or inadequate to deal with an upgrade. The odds are that these systems are not good candidates for an upgrade to Windows 8. Microsoft has worked hard to provide driver compatibility but you may find that peripherals like printers that work just fine on these older systems may need new drivers or may not work at all. Personally, I feel that an older system that is currently serving your purposes should be left alone for now. Even Windows XP is still receiving security updates from Microsoft.
Those who upgrade Windows 7 systems will have an easier path but may still face software and hardware glitches. Hardware companies always seem to lag in providing drivers for new operating systems. I think a good general rule is to wait a few months before trying any new operating system. Microsoft has already issued a large update for Windows 8 and more fixes will probably be forthcoming as the inevitable bugs are uncovered.
Technology enthusiasts who enjoy trying new things will obviously be interested in Windows 8. If you are one of those who see the PC as just a tool to accomplish certain tasks and have no particular interest in learning about new operating systems, then I see no compelling reason to upgrade to Windows 8 yet. But in the last analysis this is a personal choice.

Tricks to Utilize Hard Drive Space Efficiently

Nowadays, we get hard disks in huge sizes but still most of the people quetch about not having enough space to keep all their data (both official and personal). A lot of these data are of use but there are many which is unnecessarily occupying your precious space which you can utilize in saving better things. So, what stopping you to get rid of them? Probably laziness! Or not enough knowledge about how to do it. Here are few of the best ways which can be really useful for you to manage your disk space strategically.
Cleanup your Desktop
It is very important to keep your computer clean with limited number of icons on your screen. Many people keep their computer cluttered with so many icons on their computer screen. Other than making your desktop look ugly, it eats up a lot of disk space and makes your computer slow. If your computer fits this description, it’s time for some beautification. Keep only those icons on your desktop screen which are really important and by that I mean only those which you need to access immediately (not your childhood album or favorite movies). Rest all the icons goes off the screen. Keep all other useful files into some other location (local drive) and delete all files, which are of no use.
Let go of all other unwanted files
There must be numerous files in your computer that are not of use anymore. These data are uselessly consuming your system’s memory. Delete every file from your computer’s permanent memory. You must have downloaded many files or software that was required only for a small period of time. Let go of all those files. There may be hundreds of movies, videos that you have seen so many times, delete all of it or shift it to cloud if you like to have a collection. There may be several files saved on more than one location, delete all keeping one copy of it.
Disk Defragmentation
Performing defragmentation is the best way to utilize disk space. Data that you store in your computer is saved in an unorganized manner. This contributes in reducing performance as when you view a file, computer has to look into different segments of memory to locate bits of information. Over time, when you delete few files, a lot of fragments of data is left empty. Defragmentation is the process of utilizing these spaces and rearrange a file so that one file exist at one place. Windows offer user friendly Defragmentation tools to rearrange data on hard disk and reunite fragmented files. This also help in enhancing your computer’s efficiency. You can schedule the defragmentation tool to run on their own, without bothering you or you can schedule it as per your need.

5 Easy DOs to make your PC gain Speed

If your computer is an old hag you would know how irritating it can be at times when you have to wait ages for it to startup or the frequent crashes that follows, especially at times when you need it the most; during exams, while finishing up an important presentation or when updating some important financial software. Crashing and drop in speed is proportional to the age of your computer. The older your computer gets, the more it loses performance. However, this doesn’t assure that a new computer cannot suffer for performance diminution. Performance depends on a lot of factor and a proper optimization technique can help your computer gain a significant speed, even if it is old.
Following are few guidelines that can help your computer come out of sluggishness and regain its former enthusiasm.
Check if your hardware is sufficient
One of the biggest reasons of a slow PC is insufficient hardware components. It is very important that the hardware component should be sufficient to run the operating system and other applications installed on your computer. Ideally, your hardware configuration should be above the minimum system requirement of OS and application software you want to install, to make your computer perform smoothly. If your hardware is not able to fulfill this need, then you should upgrade your hardware for a placid performance.
Beware of Malwares
Malwares are the most hideous creature from which none of the live computer is completely safe. Malware is actually a common name given to all kinds of malicious programs that can cause some sort of harm to your computer, like Virus, Adware, Spyware, Trojans, Worms, etc. Every single computer on earth is vulnerable to virus attack. All these malicious programs are capable of causing some sort of damage to your computer or the data in it. The only way to keep these intrusive viruses, spyware or adware off your computer is by constant scanning using an efficient antivirus program and taking other precautions like not clicking on unknown links, scanning external devices before opening it, not visiting to suspicious sites etc.
Let go of useless apps
There must be many applications on your computer that you installed long back but do not use it. These applications consumes a lot of space and system memory and contributes in slowing your PC down, so lets give a nice sweep to your computer, your computer totally needs it. Uninstalling these applications will lighten your computer and as a result, this will enhance performance.
Give your computer some space to breathe
It is very important to decrease congestion in your computer. There are so many temporary files created every day. Just imagine if your computer is 5 years old, how many temporary files would there be? There are various tools to perform disk cleanup. These tools can identify what files are safe to delete and what are not. You can use these tools to delete temporary internet files, downloaded program files, optional Windows component that are not useful for you, empty Recycle Bin, remove shadow copies and un-used restore points.
Move on to new OS
If you are still stuck on the old versions of Operating System, it is time to give your computer a new life. Go on for the latest version of operating system. If you are Windows user, then go for Windows7 or Windows8. These Operating Systems are much faster than the previous ones and because of its new look and feel, you will definitely enjoy using them. However, if you do plan to switch over to a new OS, make sure that the system requirements are met properly otherwise you’ll end up blaming the new OS for getting you into a worst condition.

No room for Viruses in your Computer

Viruses are those unpleasant programs that get into your computer uninvited and try to cause some sort of software or hardware malfunction or even worse. Viruses are nothing but a code that has the capability to replicate itself and spread from one machine to another through external devices, insecure network, CDs, flash disks etc. Different viruses are designed to function differently. Where some viruses are does not cause any harm to your computer but is simply designed to disturb operators, some viruses are extremely dangerous and causes severe jeopardy to your computer.
Of all the medium through virus can spread, internet is the biggest hub. As PCs nowadays are getting more and more integrated with internet, chances of virus intrusion increases gravely. However, these invasions can be restrained through proper precautions. Following is a list of few things that you can do in order to keep your computer safe from these hideous creatures.
  • Give your PC a strong antivirus protection.
  • The best and the easiest way to keep your computer protected is by installing a sound antivirus software. There are many antiviruses available nowadays that furnish tremendous protection from any sort of viruses. The choice of antivirus totally depends on how much protection you need.  If your data are not that critical then a simple version of antivirus would do where as if your data are too critical and you cannot afford to lose it, then an antivirus that delivers total protection is compulsory. If you are a constant internet user, then antiviruses that offers real-time protection is a necessity.
  • Keep your antivirus up-to-date. No antivirus is going to work for you if you do not keep it updated. This is because numerous viruses are born every day. If your antivirus is old, it will not be sufficient to battle the newborns. All good antivirus companies keep introducing its new versions from time to time. You just need to maintain a pace with them and upgrade the latest one to keep you out of any danger.
  • Use a firewall. A firewall is a software or a hardware device, which is developed to restrict unauthorized entry to your computer (by viruses or hackers). If you do not have a firewall, your computer will be vulnerable to malicious infections.
  • Be conscious about opening random attachments. Only open those attachments or files that are sent to you by a known source. People often be careless about these links or files or other kind of attachment and unconsciously open them. These unknown attachments are mostly viruses and once a virus enters your computer, you will have a hard time pushing them out. In fact, the best way to discover whether the file is a virus or not, is through scanning. Always scan these attachments before downloading them.
  • Do not download stuff from unknown sites. Almost all good antiviruses combines a feature of suggesting whether the website is free from viruses or not. You would see a small green check symbol on those sites, which are safe to visit, and a small red cross symbol on those pages which are unsafe. Do not visit sites, which are unsafe because those sites are definitely infected.

Kill Any Process in Windows 7

It is pretty annoying when a program you want to exit do not close, because of too many apps running in your desktop. The primary step a user takes to close that particular program is opening a Task Manager. What if the Task Manager stucks? What should you do next? You can make use of your command prompt to kill the process. Let us see how do you kill a process in Windows 7.
Log in to your system with administrator privileges and open up the command prompt. Type “Tasklist” on the command prompt, it will give you a list of processes running on your system. The processes will have their ‘process IDs’.
Which command do I need to use in order to kill a process?
“Taskkill” is the command which has to be used to kill any process. Let us assume that you need to kill Firefox, all you need to type is:

Taskkill /IM firefox.exe /F
The significance of ‘/F’ is it kills any process forcefully, it is not always that you should kill the process using the process names. You can also kill the processes using their process IDs, you need to run the command called:
Taskkill /PID 2704 /F
How do I kill many processes simultaneously?
At times killing processes one by one would not only be a tedious job, but also a time consuming job. So it will be great, if you can kill all the processes at a time. The command to kill all the processes at a time is:

Taskkill /PID 2704 5472 4344 /F

Top Reasons for Windows 7 Freezes

Windows 7 Freeze

Computers have become an extension of the human mind, performing several operations as and when required. Every business organization makes use of computers for their daily tasks. However, there are many situations in which a computer may fail, frustrating the user. It is an annoying experience for users and results in delays in ongoing tasks or processes. Microsoft recently launched the Windows 7 operating system, which has gained immense popularity worldwide. One issue users of this new operating system tend to bring up is freezing of the machine. There are various reasons that cause Windows 7 to freeze, affecting the work of the user.
Users of Windows 7 experience system hanging while booting up or shutting down. Some users may not be able to perform any actions using the mouse and keyboard as they suddenly stop responding to user commands. These situations are mainly due to the presence of malicious files on the machine without the user’s knowledge. Viruses and spyware cause the machine freeze by corrupting critical system files.
Another important reason for a system hang is simultaneous running of multiple programs. Based on the hardware configuration of the computer, it performs various actions as per instructions from the user. If a person runs a number of programs without considering the capacity of the computer, the system will definitely come to a stand-still, leading to a frozen impact. Sometimes, Windows 7 freeze occurs because of the corrupt Windows file registry. This happens when the registry database is stuffed with uneven and obsolete file entries, making the location useless for performing operations.
Many measures are available to overcome the problem of Windows 7 freezes to an extent. Making use of updated anti-virus definitions will eventually prevent the entry of malware into the system. It is also necessary to improve the configuration of the machine and reduce the number of processes running, which will prevent system freezing. Most importantly, it is necessary to clean the Windows registry regularly using various tools especially designed to prevent system freeze.
Following these steps will help in reducing the freezing problem occurring on machines using the Windows 7 operating system. If the Windows 7 freeze problem exists, it is advised that you get help from experienced technical support professionals to sort out the complications.

Why flame virus is considered to be dangerous

The flame virus is used as an espionage technique, where computer systems are sabotaged and vital data stolen. A famous data security organization, Symantec Corp suspected that Iran was succumbed to this viral attack in April. According to reliable sources, US and Israel together developed Stuxnet, a virtual weapon sharing a similar code as Flame and used it to slow Iran’s nuclear program. Flame is twenty times more complex and bigger than Stuxnet, which makes it even more risky. This virus can delete files leading to absolute failure of mission-critical programs or disabling of operating systems. It can be used to destroy vital infrastructure systems, like chemical and manufacturing plants. The virus can have terrible impacts on industrial control systems that can lead to malfunctioning of an entire nation.
There are few noteworthy source names for different module families in Flame’s source code, like:
a) Flame – Performs attack functions
b) Boost – Gathers information
c) Jimmy – Attack module type
d) Flask – Attack module type
e) Spotter – Snack modules
f) Euphoria – File leaking modules
g) Transporter – Replication modules
h) Headache – Attacks properties
The initial entry of the flame virus is vague – it can be by spearphishing or from infected websites. Later it spreads to systems connected by a LAN or via an USB drive. It can detect relevant information from passwords concealed with asterisk, take screenshots from IM programs, record vital content from verbal discussions over the microphone. Post data collection, all of it is uploaded on command servers that are distributed globally. This warfare virus is dangerous from the point of view of national security as it focuses on the masses and not on selective persons. Recently, The UN International Telecommunications Union has issued a warning to all countries to stay on high alert against attacks by this hazardous virus.

BIOS Password is Not a Permanent Entity of Your PC.

Do you know, what is the first code to run on your computer? It is the BIOS software which initializes the entire process of your computer. As soon as you turn on the switch, it conducts the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) and then passes the control over to operating system. Many people are of the notion that it is the operating system which controls the entire process but it is not so.
BIOS conducts POST that checks for proper functioning of computer components such as CPU, hard drive, video card, mouse and keyboard and also starts these components. The next work is to search and locate the boot loader which will pass the control over to the operating system and you can work with your PC. The processes which you can control through BIOS interface are setting the system clock, enabling hardware or disabling it, setting passwords, configuring hardware. Initially, BIOS used to be stored onto the ROM of the motherboard. Then, the manufacturers started storing it in flash memory which made it feasible to upgrade BIOS once the computers are sold. It is only Windows computers which have a BIOS, the non-Windows computers have Extensible Firmware Interface(EFI). However, the dominant one is the BIOS.
Does Mac OS X have BIOS?
Openfirmware of Mac OS X has the same functionality as BIOS of Windows, it also checks the function of hardware and direct the process to Mac. Openfirmware interface can be accessed by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds, at the same time press “CMD,” “OPT,” “O,” and “F” keys. Once the required modifications are done, you can exit either by typing “bye” or “boot” or “mac-boot” depending upon the version of your Mac OS X.
Reset your BIOS password in a number of ways:
1. Obtain the backdoor BIOS password:
Backdoor password is the one which is set by the manufacturer every year. This password is used for maintenance and testing. Backdoor password will work even if you have a manual password set for your BIOS. Depending upon the manufacturers, backdoor passwords are revived over a period of time.
2. Reset/Remove BIOS password by software:
You can also reset or remove your BIOS password using BIOS/CMOS Password recovery Tool. This is third party software which is not too expensive to purchase. Once it is installed, you can recover your BIOS password on your monitor. There are certain versions of BIOS on which this tool has been proved to be effective: ACER/IBM BIOS, AMI BIOS, AMI WinBIOS 2.5, Award 4.5x/4.6x/6.0
3. Remove CMOS battery and Reset your BIOS password:
It is a common method of resetting BIOS password by removing CMOS battery provided the battery is not soldered to the motherboard. Once the battery is removed, the BIOS will get back to its factory settings and the password will be removed.
Steps to reset BIOS password by removing battery:
a. Turn off your PC and unplug the power supply.
b. Open the case of the computer.
c. Locate the battery on motherboard, remove it carefully and wait for few seconds.
d. Put the computer case back and boot your PC.
If an error message says “CMOS Checksum Error-Defaults Loaded”, then your BIOS password has been reset.
After all, decision is yours for which method to go for.

  • Date modified may not change with the date of last use.
  •  Number of files may change without any addition or deletion.
  • Some of the above mentioned happenings may not because of virus but because of few of the following reasons:
  •  Spyware may be loaded onto your computer without your knowledge, this software is usually used for monitoring computer activities and get info from your system. To avoid this issue, user should have an anti-spyware.
  •  Too many programs may be running in your PC, which may be a reason for your computer to slow down.
  •  There may be a scheduled program running in your PC which the manufacturer thinks to be vital for your computer. These programs are Windows Updater, Anti Virus software, Backup Programs, etc.
There may be ample number of reasons for poor performance of your PC however, it is very important that you have updated anti-virus software in your PC. Such software do not remove virus completely but prevents virus from attacking your system. Therefore, this should be the first software to be loaded in your PC. It is very important to update your anti-virus software frequently as new viruses are discovered at a very fast pace and without updated software, it would be difficult to protect your computer from severe attacks.
When you upload an anti-virus, scan your PC before running any other program. If there is any virus detected then go for anti-virus software recommendation. If virus can’t be cleaned then see whether that file is important for your system, if not go for delete or quarantine. If it is important then find same file which is virus free to replace the infected file. Restart your computer to make sure of a virus free system.
It is always good to install two anti-virus software but if your system becomes slower, it is advisable to have single anti-virus software. After all, computer is one of the most valuable assets of yours and you can let it corrupt so easily..

- If your business demands lot of traveling, then you can use your phone in the foreign countries too.

Disadvantages of Unlocking an iPhone

- Unlocking an iPhone may prevent you from downloading iPhone software updates, as the algorithms that developers use to allow their programs to unlock iPhones are based on specific software versions.
- If your iPhone is under warranty when you unlock it, doing so also voids the warranty.
- If your iPhone experiences any problems afterward, you will be responsible for all associated repair costs.

Windows 8 Startup – Manually Add or Remove Programs

If you thought that I was bit crazy when looking at the title post, I would not hold you wrong, after all, who wants to add programs to Windows Startup and make it even slower. All we do is keep removing programs or at least delay it. So, what’s the real idea of this topic ? Its about to let you know about a change in Windows 8 from Windows 7 and a very common question asked “Where is the start up folder in Windows 8″.
That’s a very good question and sadly for freshly installed Windows 8 Users, this option is actually missing, but for Windows 7 users who upgraded to Windows 8, this folder is still in place. I was pretty sure of that because I can still see some of my old program still getting launched after the upgrade.
Important : Also to let you know that you can no longer manage Windows 8 Startup programs from MSCONFIG. Instead, its now managed from Task Manager. Launch the Task Manager and switch to Start up Tab.
In case Start Up folder is missing :
If you had used Windows 7, it was always there in Programs Menu and at two places. One was common to all users while other is user specific. Create a folder named as Startup
  • User Specific: C:UsersAshishMAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup
  • All Users : C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp
If its already there :
Type following in the Run Prompt (Win+R) for quick access.
  • shell:startup (User Specific)
  • shell:common startup (All Users)
How to Add or Remove Program :
Windows launches any executable program which is available in Windows 8 Startup Folder. So all you need is a shortcut in that folder of the program you would like to add. You may find it odd, but if you right click on the startup folder and look for New Shortcut action, its missing. You are only allowed to create folders. So this is what you need to do
  • Right Click on the Desktop > New Shortcut > Browser for Program > Done.
  • Now drag and drop this shortcut on your Desktop to the Start-up folder.
Add Shortcut to Startup Folder

In case you want to remove anything from start up folder, I will suggest you to rather disable it using the Task Manager. This way you have an option to re-enable it whenever you want, and you will never have to remember what was the program name.
Windows 8 Task Manager Startup Program
In case you did not notice that the programs ,which are manually included, do not have any impact rating. I guess that Windows does rank it over time, but for the program above, which had been there since upgrade, there had been no ranking till now.

Samsung Galaxy S IV may have unbreakable screen

Samsung Electronics, the world's leading technology company by revenue, is likely accelerating the launch of its next-generation flagship Galaxy smartphone -- which may come with a breakthrough unbreakable screen.
Codenamed "Project J" after mobile division chief JK Shin, development of the new Galaxy S IV could be aimed for release by as early as April, according to analysts and tech blogs.
And, as smartphones increasingly look alike - the converging form factor - an unbreakable screen could be a big selling point for the Galaxy, which is battling Apple Inc's iPhone to lead the $200 billion plus smartphone market.
The Galaxy S IV is also expected to have bigger and better display, powerful quad-core processing power and a 13-megapixel camera, with picture density improving to 441 pixels per inch (ppi), a big improvement from the Galaxy S III's 306 ppi and better than the iPhone 5's 326 ppi.
Samsung Electronics, the world's leading technology company by revenue, is likely accelerating the launch of its next-generation flagship Galaxy smartphone -- which may come with a breakthrough unbreakable screen.
"Looking to the first half of 2013, we see evidence of Samsung likely accelerating the release of the Galaxy S IV - compared with May (this year) for the Galaxy S III," said UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois. "We believe preparations for volume manufacturing of unbreakable plastic substrate displays continue. All in all, we could see a strong products push in the high-end in the first half, followed by other releases."
Samsung declined to comment.
Samsung, a major backer of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, is a frontrunner in developing unbreakable screens, as OLED panels can replace glass substrate with plastic material. Down the road, mobile gadgets could be flexible as well as unbreakable.
"Eventually, they'll have unbreakable and flexible displays. Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014. That's going to be a game-changer," said Mark Newman, an analyst at Stanford Bernstein in Hong Kong.
Both Newman and Gaudois are ranked as 5-star analysts, the top ranking, by Thomson Reuters StarMine for their recommendations on Samsung.
Courtroom revisited
It would also be a game-changer for Samsung, which has built its reputation as a 'fast follower' of others' technologies and designs.
The South Korean consumer electronics giant faces off against Apple again on Thursday in a US courtroom for a follow-up ruling on whether it copied some of its US rival's patents and should pay the $1 billion awarded to Apple by jurors in an August verdict.
Samsung wants the verdict overturned, while Apple wants the damages to be increased and Samsung phones banned in the United States.
Since that landmark verdict, however, Samsung shares have gained 14 percent to record highs, while Apple shares - dented by a maps app fiasco, tight supply of its iPhone 5 and ever tougher competition in the mobile market - have slipped by nearly a fifth, wiping more than $120 billion off its market value.
Barring any extra costs related to the US ruling, Samsung should report a fifth straight record profit this quarter, as profits from its component business recover and more than offset thinning margins on mobile phones - squeezed by higher year-end holiday marketing campaigns.
"Samsung's strength extends beyond cool products, they're also a leader in the technology behind these devices. We see further upside to Samsung's stock as success in smartphones continues and chips and display profits also rebound," said Newman. "In smartphones, the opportunity is for Samsung to take more share from Apple in the premium segment, where Apple is still dominant."
UBS estimates Samsung will ship around 22.5 million of its Galaxy S III and Note II devices in the quarter to end-December, up from 20 million in July-September. Shin said in November that Galaxy S III sales would hit 40 million by the end of this month.
In a worst-case scenario for Samsung, US judge Lucy Koh could treble the damages payable to Apple, given the jury in August found Samsung "willfully" infringed some Apple patents.
"That would be a major blow to Samsung's fundamentals and overall investor sentiment, but it's not the most likely scenario," said Young Park, a 4-star StarMine analyst at Woori Investment & Securities.

Tricks and few cool bugs in Windows 7

We know we like to find things hidden like loose coins hidden in Dad’s pants or maybe checking out any new Marvel movie looking for hidden stuff that would give us a clue on what’s coming soon. We love the mystery of it, and Windows has some hidden treasures as well. We know that Windows isn’t perfect, no program is. And these bugs err…..Easter eggs make the King of OS look like a Joker. Let’s check out these hidden goodies and maybe they may come out handy.
Let’s use our head first and try some basic math. Let’s check out a bug in Windows 7 calculator

Windows Calculator
Open calculator by clicking Start > Run or just type in the Search bar “calc”. quotation marks not included
Now compute this: type 4, and then take the square root by using the square root button. Of course, the answer will be 2. Now, subtract it from the answer (2).  Press the equal button.
What do you get now?
Calculator bugs in windows 7
Experts don’t have an explanation for this. This functional error maybe a bug in the design and this runs across all Windows version.

Telnet – Star Wars Trick
Long ago in a galaxy far, far away….computer nerds are rejoicing everywhere. With the use of Telnet or just any computer with Telnet can do this. We can check out the cmd line version of Star Wars: A New Hope. This is a bit of an oldie but will still send shivers and a single drool to any Star Wars maniac.
Head on to Control Panel, go to Programs, go to Programs and Features, then Turn Windows Features On or Off. And from the listing, tick the box right next to “Telnet Client”.
Next, open Command Prompt. Hit Run then type cmd. Click enter.
On Command Prompt, put these on the field: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl. Enter
It will run Star Wars.

Old Styled XP ALT -TAB
Another pointless trick that we will run here but still a fun bug to do in Windows 7. Well, there is a bug in Windows 7 that would launch the old fashioned style of Windows XP’s ALT -TAB switcher. Your usual Windows 7 ALT – TAB is            huge, crystalline in design and almost stretches the whole screen. To which, the old Windows XP ALT -TAB is in all modesty: disgusting.
To do this:
Press down the Left (or maybe Right) Alt key.
Press and release the opposite Alt key
Maintain and keep holding down the first Alt button, and then press the Tab key
The old XP ALT – TAB design will appear.

Window’s Godmode
A neat trick for Windows 7 that’s been doing the rounds in the interwebs, is the Godmode. Godmode as Microsoft experts say is a term used to provide a window where you can access all the settings in Windows and thus you don’t have to browse any options or folders in Control Panel.
Make a folder. And rename the folder: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

It will show about  50 configurations and options with its quick links and will make life easier for you.

Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO.

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Subject: Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!"

THIRD
Subject: Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
And Finally...

FIFTH
Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now. This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

Analysis: Beware forwarded emails offering esoteric tips and tricks "you never knew." Most of the claims in this message are either false or have limited applicability. We'll examine them one by one:

CLAIM: The worldwide emergency number for cell phones is 112.
Not quite. 112 is the Europe-wide emergency phone number. Throughout most of the European Union and some neighboring countries, dialing 112 will connect callers to local emergency services. The system doesn't include North and South America, Asia, or Africa.
According to some sources, many, but not all, cell phone models are pre-programmed to redirect calls made to any of the most common emergency numbers (e.g., 911, 999, 000, 112) to the proper local services regardless of the caller's location. And many, but not all, cell phone models and service providers will allow the most common emergency numbers to be dialed even if the caller is outside his or her regular service area, or the phone lacks a SIM card. However, no mobile phones can put through calls, emergency or otherwise, from locations where no cell service exists at all.
Within the U.S., dialing 911 remains the most direct and reliable way of contacting emergency services regardless of what kind of phone you use. Don't dial 112, unless you want to play Russian Roulette with your life.

CLAIM: Unlock a car door with your cell phone and a spare remote key.
False. As in these pages, cell phones and remote keyless entry systems work on entirely different radio frequencies. Therefore, cell phones are incapable of re-transmitting the signal from a remote key to unlock a car door.

CLAIM: Press *3370# to access 'reserve battery power.'
False. On some Nokia phones, users can punch in special codes and toggle between speech codec modes to 1) enhance voice transmission quality at the cost of diminished battery performance, or 2) enhance battery performance by decreasing voice quality. Apparently, some users have misconstrued the latter as "tapping into reserve battery power." On that score the email is doubly erroneous because *3370# is the code for enhancing voice quality — so using it actually decreases battery life!

CLAIM: Press *#06# to disable a stolen cell phone.
Not exactly. On some cell phone models, but not all, pressing *#06# will cause the phone's 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity to be displayed. Some service providers, but not all, can use that information to deactivate the handset. In any case, it isn't necessary to supply an IMEI number to cancel your cellular account in the event of theft; simply call your provider, give them the appropriate account information, and tell them the phone was stolen.

CLAIM: Make 411 calls on your cell phone without charge by dialing (800) FREE 411.
Basically true though cell phone users may still incur a charge for minutes used, depending on the specifics of their plan.
