If you have been using Windows 8 for a while, you must be always wondering why there are fixed number of rows for your PC or Surface while some of your friends have additional 2 rows or sometimes fewer. Today we are going to help you understand this idea and also provide a solution to increase the number of rows if you cant using the default way to add more apps to your start screen.
Warning : Though its best to stick with what you have because having more apps pinned will distract you even more and if they all are live tiles, you can even get confused.
Number of rows in Windows 8 Start Screen completely depends on two things,
o Monitor’s Physical Size
o And its Screen Resolution.
The higher it is, more rows you will have, but then there is a combination to both of them. For example :
o A 10. or 11.6 inch screen at resolution of 1920 x 1200 will have 4 rows while a 13.3 inch screen at same resolution will have 6 rows.
o Again a 10. or 11.6 inch screen at resolution of 2560 x 1440 will have 3 rows while a 13.3 inch screen at same resolution will have 5 rows.
A complete table for Screen Sizes from 10.1 inch to 23 inch and Screen Resolution rom 800 X 600 to 2560 x 1440 is available. So if you want to change number of rows without using any software, check if your screen size and resolution can help. I guess now its clear why Surface Tablet has less number of rows than anybody having a bigger monitor.
Inbuilt Option to Show More Tiles
Now if you tried out screen resolution of 1920 X 1080 or more, I will suggest you to check if you get to see this option enabled.
o On Start Screen, Press WIN + I to display settings option.
o Select Tiles and see if you an option which says Show More Tiles. This can help you increase the rows to around 6.
Changing Rows using a third part Application :
Now since any desktop application will not run on Windows RT, you guys don’t have a choice here except playing around with resolution, but for Windows 8 Pro Users can try out a software that can change number of rows on start screen without depending on any kind of resolution. Warning you again, it might mess up yourscreen look and feel if the combination does not go well.
o First create a restore point.
o Once done, Unzip and extract it.
o In the extracted folder, there will be a file name as Win8StartScreenTiles.ex which you need to rename to Win8StartScreenTiles.exe
o Next run the application, you might get warning, allow and you will get a very simple screen which asks you to change number of rows.
o Make your choice and apply.
o It will show you the all apps screen and then start screen and back to desktop.
